Children Cancer Stories by Rukh Yusuf - Blog # 162
I am Rukh Yusuf, Clinical Pharmacist, also specialized in Total Parenteral Nutrition and Bone Marrow Transplant. I have been working in the Pediatric Oncology unit of a public hospital for several years. The mission of this blog is to bring to you the real-life stories of child patients suffering from cancer. Cancer is still a difficult disease to handle and treat. However, when it strikes the children, some so young that they cannot even speak, their agony is beyond expression and words. Let us pray especially for children suffering from cancer for early and complete remission. May Allah shower His Merciful Blessings upon them. Aameen. When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness, the entire family's world changes. This is the story of Ali, a six-year-old boy, and the journey his family is navigating after his diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
It all started when Ali began feeling unusually tired and started getting frequent fevers. Initially, his parents thought it was just a common virus. But when Ali’s energy levels didn’t bounce back and he developed unusual bruising, they took him to the doctor. After a series of tests, the diagnosis came: Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Hearing the word "leukemia" felt like the ground had been pulled out from under them. Their lively and loving boy was suddenly thrust into a world of hospitals, needles, and treatments.
Before his illness, Ali loved playing outside with his friends and playing games. Now, his days are often spent in a hospital bed, undergoing treatments that leave him feeling exhausted and nauseated. Ali misses his friends and school, and the isolation makes him sad. He doesn’t understand why he can’t just play like he used to.
For parents, watching their energetic child become frail and sick is heart-wrenching. Mother often finds herself crying in private, trying to be strong in front of Ali and his younger sister. Father, who used to be the family’s rock, is now struggling with his own fears and anxieties. The couple tries to support each other, but the emotional toll is heavy.
The financial impact of Ali’s illness is profound. Even with public hospital, the out-of-pocket expenses for treatments, medications, and hospital visits add up quickly. Father has had to take unpaid leave from his job to help care for Ali, which further strains their finances. They worry about paying bills and maintaining their home, adding another layer of stress to an already overwhelming situation.
Ali’s four-year-old sister, doesn’t fully understand what is happening but senses the tension and sadness. She misses the attention she used to get from her parents and feels confused and scared.
Ali’s weakened immune system means they have to be extra cautious about germs, leading to more frequent cleaning and avoiding crowded places. These changes add to the workload and stress for parents, who are already stretched thin.
Through all the difficulties, there are moments of hope and joy. When Ali has a good day, free from pain and fatigue, the whole family relax. They treasure these moments, finding strength in Ali’s resilience and bravery. Parents are inspired by their son’s ability to smile and find joy despite everything he’s going through.
Ali’s journey with AML is far from over, but his family is determined to face it together. They have learned to appreciate the small victories and support each other through the tough times. Friends and family have rallied around them, offering help and love, which has been a great source of comfort.
In the midst of their struggle, Ali’s family has discovered a deep well of strength and love. They are united in their determination to support Ali and each other, finding hope in the darkest of times. While AML has brought unimaginable challenges, it has also brought them closer together, showing them the true meaning of family and resilience.
Prayers for Ali’s complete recovery and healthy life. May he recover quickly, and his disease never comes back.
Lots of prayers for all sick children to recover quickly and never experience their illnesses again. May they lead happy and healthy lives once more. Aameen.
